The following are answers to the most frequently asked questions about jury duty. Other questions may be addressed to the jury clerk of Rockdale Superior Court. Most questions are answered during the jury orientation program. You may contact the jury clerk at 770-278-7900.
Who must serve?
Jury service is both a privilege and a duty of all citizens of this county. Jurors are selected by a random process. The number of jurors called is determined by the presiding trial judge. The right to trial is one of the fundamental American rights, guaranteed by the State or Federal Constitutions.
What if I have a medical problem?
Anyone with a medical problem MUST comply with the "Medical Examination" requirement and must have a doctor's verification of the illness being claimed.
May I postpone my service to a later date?
The court will try to work with you if you have a hardship and cannot serve for the week you have been summoned. You must call the jury clerk at 770-278-7902 to ask for deferral. NO POSTPONEMENTS ARE ALLOWED IN THE LAST WEEK BEFORE TRIALS. If you have a medical excuse, it will be necessary that you furnish the jury clerk with a medical excuse from your doctor. If you are a student and need to be deferred, it will be necessary to furnish a copy of your schedule.
What are the jury terms?
Jury service may be for a period of one day or longer, beginning on the date shown on the summons. Most jurors serve on one or two jury panels, and their service does not generally last longer than one week.
I am self-employed. May I be excused?
This is not a legal reason to be excused from jury duty.
I am no longer a legal resident of Rockdale County. What do I do?
You will need to furnish the jury clerk with your new address. There is a form to be completed for this information.
How much am I paid?
Jurors in Rockdale County are paid $25.00 per day. You will be given a Certificate of Service, showing that you served as a juror on specified dates.
What is the proper attire?
Casual wear is acceptable. No shorts or halter tops are allowed.
What do I need to bring?
You need to bring with you on reporting date the questionnaire you have received with your summons properly completed. You may wish to bring material to read for while you wait. DO NOT BRING CELL PHONES! Cell phones and pagers are not allowed in the courtroom ~ no exceptions!
