The mission of the Georgia Department of Veterans Services is to serve veterans residing in Georgia, their dependents and survivors in all matters pertaining to veterans benefits. This responsibility falls into two basic tasks: informing the veterans and their families about veterans benefits; and directly assisting and advising veterans and their families in securing the benefits to which they are entitled. While all veterans and their families earn "benefits," all/each must be requested for in writing.
To support these missions, the Department maintains a Claims Staff at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Regional Office, 1700 Clairmont Road, Decatur, Georgia 30033 (next to the DVA Medical Center), operates field offices with itinerant service in the state's 159 counties, and provides representatives in the Atlanta, Augusta, and Dublin VA Medical Centers, and in the Georgia War Veterans Homes in Augusta and Milledgeville. The field offices provide direct assistance to veterans at the local level. The Conyers Division Field Office provides this assistance to Rockdale County, as well as to Barrow, Henry, Morgan, Newton, and Walton counties, and to the East DeKalb and South Gwinnett areas.
The Department representatives provide counsel and assist veterans and their dependents in gathering the documents and information required to process their claims filed with VA, and certifies all earned state benefits. The Department of Veterans Service also is the state approving agency for education programs administered by Veterans Affairs.
