This is an entirely voluntary program where a dispute-resolution trained and registered neutral meets with a first-time accused juvenile and the victim(s) involved. The program is used in minor delinquent or status offense juvenile cases in order to reach an agreement regarding appropriate outcome, sanction and/or restitution, and to avoid formalized Juvenile Court proceedings.
In ungovernable/unruly cases, the neutral will mediate an agreement between the parent(s) and the juvenile regarding the expectations and responsibilities of each. If the terms of the agreement are not abided by, then a Juvenile Petition regarding the delinquent or status offense will be brought for formal Court action. The mediation sessions will be held in the Juvenile Court Programs Office.
